Taiwan Railway Zhongli Old Station Enters History, Expert Recalls Station's Establishment History of 'First-Ever Department Store Attached'

Reported 9 months ago

The recent announcement of the decommissioning and upcoming demolition of the Taiwan Railway Zhongli Old Station in September has sparked nostalgia among the public. Taiwan Railway cultural researcher Hong Zhiwen shared the station's founding history, highlighting it as the first station in Taiwan to have a department store attached. Originally built in 1971 and designed by Hou Qingyao in the 1930s, Zhongli Station was later expanded to include the now-defunct Jinshan Department Store in 1978 as a pioneering example of private investment in a railway station, offering various amenities and facilities over the years before being repurposed as a food street. Despite its architectural decline, the impending retirement of Zhongli Station due to railway underground projects prompts a call to remember its past splendor and memories.
