Taiwanese Official Involved in Corruption Case Permitted Bail of 5 Million, Reason Revealed

Reported about 1 year ago

On July 6, 2024, current chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation and former mayor of Taoyuan, Eric Chu, was granted bail of 5 million in relation to a corruption case involving the 'Huaya Science Park' land expansion project in Linkou. Accused of accepting a bribe of 5 million and returning it a year later, Chu was brought to court by the Taoyuan District Prosecutors' Office, where the court ruled for bail and the prosecutors appealed. The court later released a press release explaining the reasoning behind the bail decision, mentioning that there was no suspicion of concealing criminal proceeds for the bribe Chu allegedly received in 2017.
