A 12-year-old girl was sold by her father to a 72-year-old man to be his bride in Pakistan, a country with one of the highest rates of child marriage. Despite being prohibited locally, incidents of forcing young girls into marriage still occur frequently. The elderly man spent 500,000 Pakistani rupees (about 60,000 New Taiwan dollars) to buy the girl and forced her into marriage. The local police received a tip-off on the wedding day, rushed to the scene, rescued the girl, and arrested the elderly man and the wedding organizer. The girl's father managed to escape, but the police are pursuing him under the Child Marriage Restraint Act. This shocking child marriage case unfolded in the Charssadda district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan.
