Tragic Conflict between Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law! Young Mother Sentenced to 2 Years and 10 Months in Prison for Abusing Newborn Infant and Causing Brain Damage

Reported about 1 year ago

In the Supreme Court on June 19, 2024, a 20-year-old mother from New Taipei, Qiu, who had a strained relationship with her mother-in-law, used her newborn son as an outlet for her frustration, severely beating and throwing him twice, causing severe brain trauma to the defenseless infant. Qiu was sentenced to 2 years and 10 months for domestic violence and grievous bodily harm in the first trial. She appealed, citing postpartum depression and requesting probation for the sake of her 2-year-old son, but the second trial upheld the original verdict. The Supreme Court rejected the appeal, confirming Qiu's imprisonment. It was revealed that Qiu was young when she had two children; her newborn was just over a month old at the time of the incident. Due to constant verbal abuse from her mother-in-law, she lost control of her emotions and subjected the infant to physical violence. Despite her remorse and seeking treatment, the courts emphasized the severity of her actions on the development of the victim and upheld the sentence.
