US Bans Russian Antivirus Software 'Kaspersky' to Prevent National Security Risks

Reported about 1 year ago

The US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced on June 20th that it will prohibit the Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab from selling antivirus software in the US to prevent the Russian government from stealing information from the US government and its citizens, reducing national security and cybersecurity risks. The ban will take effect on September 29th. The US believes that Russian military intelligence continues to collaborate with Kaspersky Lab, and there are concerns that Russia could exploit the antivirus software to collect sensitive information from US citizens or install backdoor software, potentially weaponizing information. Violators of the ban could face fines, and Kaspersky Lab's subsidiaries in Russia and the UK have been placed on the sanctions list. This move could impact its overseas sales. The US cites national security risks as the reason for banning Kaspersky Lab's antivirus software from Russia.
