US Strengthening Efforts with Allies to Counter China's Semiconductor Industry

Reported 8 months ago

In an effort to further restrict China's semiconductor industry and prevent its use in military applications, Alan Estevez, Deputy Secretary of Commerce and head of export policy, is visiting the Netherlands and Japan to urge allies to enhance their capabilities in blocking China's semiconductor production. The US may also consider adding 11 more Chinese chip companies to the restriction list. Estevez aims to leverage agreements from 2023 with Japan and the Netherlands to prevent China from using chip manufacturing equipment for military purposes. Restrictions have already been put in place by Japan and the Netherlands on exporting certain machines to China, following US policies. Discussions are ongoing with allies to potentially blacklist 11 additional Chinese chip factories.
