On July 5, 2024, in the Chinese province of Hunan, a breach occurred in the dike of Dongting Lake, the second-largest freshwater lake in China, due to continuous heavy rainfall. Local authorities rushed to the scene with over a dozen sand and gravel trucks, attempting to block the water flow by filling the gap with sand and gravel. However, the strong water current caused several trucks to be swept away, leading to partial flooding of nearby homes. Witnessing a rapid increase in the breach width from 10 to 150 meters within a few hours, nearly 6000 residents were evacuated as a precaution. Despite criticism from netizens for using a less effective method, Chinese President Xi Jinping issued urgent instructions to prioritize rescue efforts and protect the lives and property of the people.
