In Japan, an outbreak of 'man-eating bacteria' caused by A-type Streptococcus has led to nearly 1,000 infections in just five months, a 2.8-fold increase from the same period last year. However, Taiwan has not experienced any abnormal conditions and is in line with trends of the past four years. Despite the bacteria's presence worldwide, the mortality rate for infections has been highlighted. Certain individuals such as those with diabetes, uraemia, neurologic abnormalities, unnoticed wounds, bedsores, or weakened immunity are at a higher risk of death. The bacteria can lead to severe infections such as necrotizing fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, with the potential to cause multiple organ failure and eventual shock-induced death.
