The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued a public health alert due to an increase in dengue virus infections in the United States and a record-breaking number of cases worldwide. South Carolina has reported four cases so far in 2024. The virus, transmitted through mosquito bites, has affected over 9.7 million people in the Americas, with Puerto Rico declaring a public health emergency. Symptoms include nausea, rash, joint pain, and more. The CDC advises supportive care since there are no approved antiviral medications, with increased risk for children under one, pregnant women, and adults over 65. The spread is expected to rise with increasing temperatures, and preventive measures include using repellents, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water sources.
