US Q1 GDP Growth Rate Slows

Reported 11 months ago

On June 27, 2024, the US Department of Commerce released the final values of the first-quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE), and May Durable Goods Orders. The GDP growth rate was higher than the initial estimate but significantly lower than the previous quarter, marking the slowest growth in nearly seven quarters and raising concerns among investors about the economic situation. After the data was announced, US stocks fluctuated at the opening on the 27th, with the Dow rising 0.02%, Nasdaq rising 0.34%, and S&P 500 rising 0.12%. The final value of the US first-quarter GDP growth rate was revised from 1.3% to 1.4%, meeting expectations but lower than the previous quarter's 3.4%, the lowest growth rate since the third quarter of 2022. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) attributed the GDP increase to higher consumer spending, residential fixed investment, non-residential fixed investment, state and local government spending, offsetting the impact of reduced inventory investment by private businesses. The final PCE price index for the first quarter rose by 3.4%, slightly higher than the initial 3.3%, the largest increase since the second quarter of last year. PCE is an important basis for the Federal Reserve's rate policy, and the May PCE data was announced on the 28th. May Durable Goods Orders increased by 0.1%, beating market expectations of a 0.1% decrease, driven mainly by a 1.3% increase in demand for computers and related products and a 0.6% increase in transportation equipment. The April orders were revised downward from a 0.7% increase to 0.2%. Excluding defense orders for aircraft, unexpected non-defense orders fell by 0.6% in May, the largest monthly decline since December of last year. Although Durable Goods Orders have increased for four consecutive months in May, the growth rate has slowed. Before the Federal Reserve begins to cut interest rates and the financing environment becomes more attractive for business investment, it is believed that there will not be a significant rebound in the manufacturing sector. However, experts anticipate a significant increase in investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies by businesses to offset the effects of long-term labor shortages and gain a competitive advantage through new technologies.

Interest Rate Reversal: Seizing the Opportunity with Non-Investment Grade Bonds

Reported 11 months ago

On June 27, 2024, Canada and the Eurozone began their first round of interest rate cuts, signaling the start of a global central bank interest rate reduction cycle as market rates reached their peak. To capitalize on the upcoming interest rate cuts, fund managers suggest targeting investment opportunities in non-investment grade bonds. With inflation in the US higher than expected, the market is reassessing interest rate levels, making US credit bonds less attractive with limited downward spread potential, while European and global credit bonds become more appealing. Bond investments are seen as a balanced tool amidst stock market volatility, offering attractive yields primarily from fixed interest income, presenting a rare opportunity in the bond market. It is advised to focus on medium-term bonds amid the high rate period, especially in anticipation of bond price rebounds post-interest rate cuts.

Given the over-concentration of stock market growth in large tech stocks, it remains uncertain if the tech surge can continue. Nomura Asset Management suggests that the US Federal Reserve is likely to cut interest rates by the end of the year, and the impact of the US presidential election is limited. Continued technological advancements pose both challenges and opportunities, with AI computing applications rapidly advancing and expected to drive the market. Successful Car Promotion by Hota, Anticipating Hottest Sales Post-Spring

Reported 11 months ago

Hota Motors, a leading car manufacturer, has successfully boosted sales through its promotional efforts, with a promising performance expected during the summer vacation season. The recent promotion, named 'Vision Century Gift,' offering over NT$150,000 worth of car gifts, has significantly increased customer visits, with a 13% or more rise in foot traffic compared to pre-promotion levels. Orders have been particularly strong since the beginning of this year, nearly matching the January sales peak. The Corolla Cross model excelled in order performance, with a 30% increase in orders compared to the previous three months, while other models like RAV4 and Yaris Cross also demonstrated good sales. The promotion's success is partly attributed to last-minute orders, common during weekend sales events, and delayed car deliveries, expected to boost registration numbers in July. Hota Motors estimates June car sales to reach around 43,000 units, slightly higher than the same period last year. Despite challenges like limited Lexus quotas and a lack of major new car releases in the first half of the year, Hota Motors aims to achieve its annual sales target of 170,000 units through the summer promotion offering generous incentives like a 65-inch JVC TV with selected car purchases, zero interest rate financing up to NT$1 million, trade-in bonuses up to NT$30,000, and a five-year/140,000 km extended warranty.

Taiwan Dollar REER Higher than Korean Won for 37 Consecutive Months

Reported 11 months ago

The Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER) of the New Taiwan Dollar has been higher than the Korean Won for 37 consecutive months, indicating a continuous disadvantage for Taiwan in export competitiveness compared to South Korea. The strong US dollar led to a 0.38% appreciation of the New Taiwan Dollar in May, while the Japanese Yen, Korean Won, and Chinese Yuan remained weak. The REER data provided by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) shows the ongoing disparity between the two currencies, with the New Taiwan Dollar strengthening against the Korean Won. The outlook suggests potential challenges for Taiwan's export industries if the US Federal Reserve's expected interest rate cut leads to a further increase in the New Taiwan Dollar's exchange rate.
