The National Priced Farmed Fish, Taiwan's gilt-head bream (Sparus aurata), faced a shortage in the market last year due to drought and reduced stocking in production areas, leading to a high price of NT$41 per catty at the poolside. The Taiwan Gilt-head Bream Association recently completed a production site survey and held a production and sales alert meeting, starting peak stocking early in April rather than the usual May peak season to alleviate the shortage of whole frozen fish after October. Many fish ponds in Tainan are either adopting fish-electricity symbiosis or pausing production, causing a decrease in output, with Chiayi County now surpassing Tainan to become the top producer nationwide. There are around 3,200 hectares of specialized gilt-head bream aquaculture in Taiwan, involving over 2,000 farmers, with Chiayi County accounting for the highest share at 35%, followed by Tainan at 28%.

Both cities cite insufficient evidence provided by whistleblowers as the main reason for the lack of fines. The amendment allows for fines up to NT$50 million and rewards whistleblowers with up to 30% of the collected fine, capped at NT$10 million, but difficulties in gathering concrete evidence and the necessary real-name registration process have hindered successful cases in the two cities.
