Due to economic hardships in China, many Chinese people have resorted to illegal immigration into the United States through the US-Mexico border. The US Customs and Border Protection data shows that in 2023 alone, over 37,000 Chinese individuals were apprehended after illegally crossing the border, a 20-fold increase compared to the average of 1,500 per year over the past decade.
