FTNN News Network, July 3, 2024, 12:12 AM - In a newly constructed warehouse in Inner Lake District, Taipei, where electrical cables were stored, frequent thefts occurred recently. The police, upon receiving reports, reviewed the surveillance cameras around the site and discovered a man surnamed Wei sneaking in during the night to steal the cables. To evade detection, Wei covered two digits of the license plate with tape on the vehicle used in the theft. Despite Wei's attempt to hide, the police located the vehicle and found drugs such as methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia during a search of his home. Wei, a 45-year-old security guard, targeted the warehouse after scouting the area and would enter through gaps in the fencing at night to steal cables, load them into his vehicle, and escape on a motorcycle after the theft. Wei even tampered with the surveillance cameras but was still recorded committing the crime. The case has been transferred for prosecution on charges of theft and drug possession. The thief used tape on the license plate to escape capture. (Photo courtesy of FTNN)

During a fundraising event on July 2nd, US President Biden admitted that his performance in the first presidential debate on June 27th was not ideal, attributing it to jet lag from two overseas trips earlier in June. Biden faced criticism for his debate performance, with one Democratic congressman even publicly calling for his withdrawal. Despite White House officials attributing Biden's poor performance to a cold, Biden did not mention any illness during the event. Recent polls suggest a third of Democrats believe Biden should not seek reelection, but no other prominent Democratic candidate outperforms him in a hypothetical matchup against Trump. The polls indicate that Biden has not lost support among voters post-debate, with both him and Trump maintaining 40% support each. The US presidential election is set for November 5th.

Keelung Mayor Xie Guoliang is deeply embroiled in a recall storm, with the second stage of the recall petition having passed the threshold and the substantial vote expected in mid-September. Media veteran Huang Weihan revealed key data on the recall votes, analyzing the likelihood of a successful recall. Huang pointed out that it would take about 76,000 affirmative votes to successfully recall Xie Guoliang, who received 96,000 votes in the mayoral election, making the threshold seem lower compared to recent DPP election results in Keelung. However, Huang believes that the low voter turnout and the formation of a 'Support Guoliang Group' by the Kuomintang could make it difficult to reach the recall threshold.
