As of the end of last year, only 68,000 people have signed pre-planned medical decisions. The Patient Autonomy Act in Taiwan since 2019 allows individuals over 20 to sign advance directives for end-of-life care, but the cost has been a deterrent for many. The National Health Insurance Administration will start covering counseling fees for 4 categories of patients from July, benefiting an estimated 200,000 individuals. These categories include terminally ill patients, mildly dementia patients with autonomous capacity, individuals suffering from incurable and unbearable conditions, and those receiving home care services.
