A man was caught drunk driving after consuming 6 beers late at night, and there was also a female driver who collided with a motorcyclist while driving under the influence. Despite new laws implemented by the central government since 2022 that increase penalties for drunk driving, including higher fines, public naming and shaming, and penalties for passengers, Taipei and New Taipei City saw an increase in drunk driving cases from over 7,400 cases in 2021 to over 10,000 cases last year. The rise in cases is attributed to the lifting of pandemic restrictions, with experts suggesting a possible link to enforcement intensity. While enforcement numbers decreased in other parts of Taiwan, incidents of drunk driving accidents resulting in injuries and deaths increased by 1.9% nationwide last year. Experts suggest that in addition to harsh penalties, understanding the underlying reasons behind drunk driving and implementing appropriate measures is crucial. Concerns are raised about the upcoming summer months, where young people are seen as a high-risk group for drunk driving, calling for enhanced education and attention to recurrent offenders with alcohol addiction issues.
