Controversy Surrounding Taipei City Government's Land Acquisition for Binjiang Water Resources Center

Reported over 1 year ago

Several auto repair shops on Binjiang Street in Taipei have been targeted for acquisition by the city government to make way for the construction of the Binjiang Water Resources Regeneration Center, causing distress among business owners. Residents are frustrated as they face a second round of land acquisition after being previously displaced for road widening 30 years ago, leading to the formation of a self-help association to file administrative litigation. The Taipei City Public Works Bureau responded by emphasizing that the land acquisition for the center aligns with regulations, refuting claims of low-cost acquisition or illicit methods. The controversy stems from the hasty decision made three years ago by the previous city administration to build the center near Songshan Airport, resulting in multiple homeowners being forced to shut down their businesses due to the acquisition. The bureau further clarified that the land has been designated for a wastewater treatment plant since 1956 and that the acquisition process was approved by the central Ministry of the Interior in October 2023, meeting all legal requirements.
