Changes in Rain Pattern as Moisture Decreases Starting on Thursday

Reported 12 months ago

According to SET News on July 2, 2024, starting Friday, the high-pressure center will approach Taiwan, leading to a decrease in the afternoon convective range. Currently, there is still some distance between the Pacific high-pressure center and Taiwan, causing vigorous convective activity, especially in northern Taiwan. However, as the high-pressure center moves closer post-Friday, the subsidence effect will strengthen, suppressing afternoon convection. Therefore, on Thursday and Friday, although convective development will still occur, the range will narrow and concentrate more in mountainous areas. Moisture will increase after Saturday. Today's convective activity began in the north, while fluctuations were observed in central and southern mountainous regions. Highest rainfall appeared in New Taipei's Xindian at 101 mm, followed by Yuchi in Nantou with 80 mm, and Wulai in New Taipei with 74 mm. Due to continued clear skies, temperatures remain high, with the western region reaching around 37 to 38 degrees Celsius, peaking at 38.4 degrees in Yunlin. Eastern areas are at around 36-37 degrees, with similar conditions expected tomorrow. Taipei is forecasted to reach around 37 degrees tomorrow and up to 38 degrees on Friday before slightly dropping back to 37 degrees on Saturday. The persistence of daily afternoon thunderstorms over the past two weeks is attributed to slow overall weather changes, influenced by the weather patterns over East Asia. This prolonged warm air mass over Taiwan, the slow atmospheric changes, and the distant high-pressure center contribute to the continued high temperatures and unstable atmosphere resulting in daily afternoon convection, with the weather likely to remain similar over the next week.
