The Executive Yuan has approved the 'Enhancing Firefighting and Disaster Safety Improvement Plan' involving 22 medium-term projects with a total budget of NT$26 billion. The plan aims to strengthen firefighter safety by amending regulations, increasing firefighting personnel, introducing technology for disaster response, enhancing personal equipment, and replacing old firefighting vehicles. The projects include modifications to the Fire Services Act, increased disaster prevention responsibilities for operators, additional chapters on firefighter safety and health, and expanding firefighting training center capacity to accommodate up to 1300 trainees. Additionally, the plan seeks to introduce technology for disaster response and improve personal equipment, such as providing local firefighting agencies with 88 sets of infrared thermal imaging drones, 88 rescue robots, and over 50,000 sets of personal protective gear for firefighters. Furthermore, the plan involves replacing 346 old firefighting vehicles and adding approximately 181 special firefighting vehicles and specialized equipment for handling nuclear and biochemical disasters. The Executive Yuan emphasizes that firefighting safety is a core government value, and the allocated funds will improve operational safety and disaster response capabilities. The source of the overall budget includes NT$8.3 billion from central special allocation, NT$12.5 billion from central government budget, and NT$5.3 billion from local government budget, with local counties and cities sharing the financial burden based on their capacity. On June 13, 2024, a man named Chen was re-sentenced to life imprisonment after the 2019 'Taiwan Three Corpses Murder Case,' in which he killed his girlfriend and their twin babies, had originally resulted in a death penalty. A 25-year-old man surnamed Fang who was in the vicinity of the Taichung High Court while listening to the verdict was reportedly dissatisfied with the outcome and took a utility knife to his abdomen, causing a disturbance.
