No Interest Rate Cut by Fed, Positive Outlook for US Stocks, Nikkei, and Tech Stocks

Reported about 1 year ago

The Federal Reserve (Fed) maintained interest rates as expected on June 13, with forecasts indicating a higher probability of a 1-point cut or no cut this year. This stance has led to a positive view on risky assets, especially optimistic forecasts for US stocks, the Nikkei, and tech stocks. Factors such as progress in summer inflation and potential weakening of the job market could increase the likelihood of a rate cut this year. Despite short-term market volatility due to inflation stickiness, positive views on risky assets are maintained, with recommendations to overweight stock investments, particularly in Japanese stocks and tech stocks for the long term. While other regions have begun cutting rates, the atypical start of the easing cycle is attributed to strong US employment data and inflation levels above target, leading the Fed to refrain from substantial and rapid rate cuts. Overweight positions on US and Japanese stocks are temporarily recommended, with a focus on key policies such as trade, immigration, and energy post the US presidential election, foreseeing potential inflation upticks regardless of the elected president. Positive outlook on Japanese stocks is due to mild inflation, robust profit growth, favorable shareholder reforms, and the gradual normalization of monetary policies by the Bank of Japan. While global funds have flowed into bond funds for 24 consecutive weeks in anticipation of a Fed rate cut, the reality is lower returns or even minor losses, prompting the importance of defensive and yield-boosting bond investments before the official rate cut. Bond market volatility in the first half of the year stemmed from over-optimistic rate cut expectations, with market sentiment now looking towards reduced future volatility risks post the European Central Bank (ECB) rate cut in June and expectations of a parallel move by the Fed. Geopolitical uncertainties, the US presidential election, and rate cut ambiguities may heighten market volatility in the latter half of the year, suggesting a focus on investing in high-quality equities paired with investment-grade bonds to mitigate downside risks, presenting an optimal investment strategy.

US Overtakes China as Largest Export Destination for ASEAN

Reported about 1 year ago

According to a June 13, 2024, report from Nikkei Asia, ASEAN countries' exports to the US in the first quarter of the year surpassed those to China for the first time in six quarters, indicating a significant shift in trade activities within ASEAN as global supply chains realign. Data from ASEAN and individual governments showed exports to the US at $67.2 billion, exceeding the $57 billion to China. Experts attribute this trend to increased US purchases of semiconductors and electronic components from ASEAN, as well as China's slower economic growth. Malaysia's exports to the US in Q1 grew by 8%, while those to China decreased by 3.3%. This shift has been driven by both structural and cyclical factors, with increasing cost in China and geopolitical tensions pushing more US companies to expand beyond China, benefiting countries like Malaysia and positioning it as an attractive alternative for production. Vietnam, on the other hand, saw a 24% increase in exports to the US in the first quarter, reaching $25.7 billion, surpassing Thailand's $12.6 billion and Singapore's $12 billion. Vietnam's economist Le Dang Doanh noted the complementarity between the US and Vietnam in exports, where Vietnam's competitive pricing in goods like smartphones, electronics, agriculture products, wood furniture, textiles, and apparel has led to a significant export potential to the US. The US-China trade war has further favored Vietnam's exports to the US, with the imposed high tariffs on Chinese goods making Vietnamese products more competitive. Thailand also experienced a 9.8% increase in exports to the US in Q1, while exports to China decreased by 5.1%, mainly due to a sluggish demand for automobiles in China amid deflation risks. This shift highlights the impact of US-China relations on the export dynamics of ASEAN countries.

Despite the index hitting a new high again, foreign investors did not cover short positions, instead adding significant short positions at higher levels, showing a clear hedging intent. The top ten specific institutions also added short positions at higher levels, keeping the overall futures sentiment bearish. The lower-than-expected US inflation data ignited a strong rise in US tech stocks, prompting market participants to actively buy Taiwan electronic stocks, driving TAIEX Futures to a new all-time high. Despite main players in futures maintaining a bearish stance and option leaders showing a mixed stance between foreign and domestic investors, with the three major institutional investors actively buying in the spot market and uncertainty regarding the overall US economic factors temporarily eliminated, TAIEX Futures are expected to continue rising.

Despite the current economic growth rate estimated at 3.77% and a Consumer Price Index (CPI) year-on-year increase of 2.12%, the central bank aims to manage expectations to prevent rising prices rather than directly controlling prices, as shown through the newly implemented credit control measures specifically targeting housing loans. The market reaction will ultimately determine the effectiveness of these policies in curbing house price increases and speculative activities.
