China recently released a document on punishing 'Taiwan independence' diehards, stating that severe offenders could face the death penalty. The Chinese Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian emphasized that those who break the law, regardless of where they are, will be pursued by the Chinese authorities. However, Zhu reassured that ordinary Taiwanese need not worry as the judicial document only targets a 'minimal' number of extreme Taiwan independence diehards. The document permits the death penalty for severe offenses and even lifelong accountability, including trial in absentia. If individuals are prosecuted by Chinese authorities and are abroad, the Mainland does not have the jurisdiction to sanction them. Zhu asserted that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China and that the country's actions against Taiwan independence diehards are a lawful defense of national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. Zhu further explained that those who willingly renounce the Taiwan independence stance, cease separatist activities, take measures to mitigate or eliminate harm, or prevent harm escalation, may not face criminal charges. The document does not disturb the general Taiwanese population and specifically targets extreme Taiwan independence advocates. Zhu encouraged the Taiwanese to actively participate in cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, oppose separatist forces, and engage in promoting positive cross-strait relations.
