Doctor Jiang Shoushan suggests taking melatonin to increase bone density and prevent osteoporosis, as common medications like bisphosphonates can lead to multiple and atypical fractures upon discontinuation. Melatonin is not available for sale in Taiwan, but can be obtained through foods like bananas, pistachios, coffee, and tart cherries. Balancing bone density involves the activity of bone-forming and bone-resorbing cells, and besides calcium and vitamin D, melatonin plays a role in maintaining healthy bone density, according to Jiang. While bisphosphonates can inhibit bone-resorbing cells to prevent osteoporosis, their severe side effect of being unsuitable for long-term use can result in several fractures in a short period of time.
