A Chinese group in Japan has been carrying out 'spiritual scams,' targeting Chinese speakers, with victims mostly being Taiwanese or Chinese nationals. Posing as mediums, they convince victims to hand over money and jewelry for exorcism rituals, tricking them into believing their family's safety is at risk. Four Chinese suspects have been arrested, having scammed over 12 million Japanese yen (about 24.33 million New Taiwan dollars). These scams involve tactics like engaging targets in popular areas, leading them to meet the supposed mediums at shrines, and sharing personal information to enhance the illusion of authenticity. Over 30 similar cases have been reported in Japan since October 2023, with authorities suspecting multiple Chinese groups are involved in the scams.
